FAMILY ROAD TRIP 2019

CALIFORNIA TO COLORADO

                What is a road trip about?  Discovery, grasping the world as a bigger place than home, fun, bonding, nature, new concepts, beauty, and fun.  Shawn, Chloe, Gil and I explored together.

Chloe loved it, where astronauts train. Three quarters of a mile wide, almost 600 feet deep, 50,000 years.

I’ll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can.  John Muir   THE ROCKIES          I only booked one night at the next provincial park.     Had I been sure of a reservation at Mount Robson, we may have spent more days there.   From there we would cross into Alberta and be on mountain time. Mt. Robson is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies (12,972’) and said to be visible only twelve days a year.   Guess what we saw on arrival?   We went straight to the visitor center but they were closed  6pm The Indian name is roughly translated: Mountain of the Spiral Road.   We were impresse d with the layout of the campground when we heard it.   Site #102  Blue columbine, now we are in the Rockies   Leaving next morning at 7am, we got to see it as most people do, glorious either way with the carpet of wildflowers leading to the forest. The Great Canadian Adventure - Part 2

As long as I live, I’ll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing.   I’ll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens,  and get as near the heart of the world as I can.  John Muir HOLOHOLO BRITISH COLUMBIA              Our previous truck was lovingly called Lucille (like BB King’s guitar) as all the owners were blues fans.  Our new truck is seriously masculine and since we were going holoholo (wandering land or sea), it seemed fitting to have a Hawaiian god lead the way.  Lono is the powerful god of harvest, of winter rain, and of the season of peace, and married to Laka (of the forest).  We continued the beautiful drive to Smithers for fuel, then had to split the distance to Prince George.             Our next stop was my biggest booking mistake.  The campground at Babine Lake was, by far, the worst experience we had.  Forty km of gravel haul road from Burns Lake to the shiftiest place of all.  It was very pretty but the bugs were killer (a week plus of Benadryl to recover

The Great Canadian Adventure - Part I

I ’ll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens,  and get as near the heart of the world as I can.  John Muir The 2022 Great Canadian Adventure started with the newish truck and trailer.  Gil had done the preliminary work in January an d we just had to stock it up with all-weather clothing and plenty of non-perishable food since we really didn’t know what would be available en-route. TRIAL RUN           We made a trial run to the coastal redwoods again, convoying with D&D.     Despite all the rain, t he coast was crazy beautiful, wet hiking, and our first banana slug.     No troubles with the rig so we set out for many weeks on the road. Bon Voyage   LET THE FLOWERS BEGIN             Silver Falls, Oregon was a one-nighter, more rain hiking.   In retrospect, it was an introduction to the delight of the entire trip.   We enjoyed wildflowers everywhere we went – forest floor, open country, roadside,
