OAHU 2018

An invitational party aboard the Greenpeace icebreaker, Arctic Sunrise, just returning from a Pacific tour that included collecting specimens from the ocean garbage patch.  We toured the ship, listened to Hawaiian music, heard speakers preaching to the choir about limiting use of plastic, enjoyed the gorgeous Honolulu evening (no rain as predicted), great food.
This is the ship, btw, that was seized in the arctic by Russia and kept for nine months, the crew of 30 was released earlier, however the seizure occurred in international waters.
Greenpeace was protesting Russian oil drilling within protected boundaries.
Please support Greenpeace.

Gil & Korey enjoying a virtual reality 3D short with penguins and polar bears

At Korey's B&B, we enjoyed the waterfalls on Ka'Iwa ridge that lays between Kailua and Lanikai.  We also toured the area (it had been years for me though Gil has had several canoe races in the area).

Canoes at Kailua Beach

Hanauma Bay was the highlight of the trip for me!

I spent a lot of time trying to catch pics of the sailfin tang I've never seen on Kauai (Big Island, Maui and Lanai but not here).

NOTE:  Remember lengths given do not include the tail!

sailfin tang, 15"

sailfin tang with fins open - this was in a turbulent area, some sand, some bubbles

Many Many Parrotfish

Endemic spectacled parrotfish we had only seen on Midway in 2012!
This one is still morphing into being an alpha male, he will lose all the orange, 24"

palenose parrotfish 11-12"

alpha male bullet head parrotfish 15"

female ember parrotfish, with an algae mustache, 28"

FISH BEHAVIOR, A comical wonder

alpha male ember parrotfish,
When one alpha dies, a female converts to take over the role (see previous picture)

Photo bomb - this orangespine unicornfish, swam into my frame of the sailfin

bullethead parrot in a manini school

A christmas wrasse following a parrotfish for tidbits

Movie: please watch on a device that allows full screen
Several white ring surgeonfish, whitespotted surgeonfish and others swim among the convict tangs (manini)

Mongoose on the beach, ever thankful that Kauai does not have a big enough population of these guys to wipe out our ground nesting birds.  Hallelujah!

SE Oahu

Nice tour around SE corner of island included the crazy surf and jump off point for the very young, adventurous, or experienced at China Walls.

China Walls (cliffs)
A 10 foot jump into the water only to scramble back up the rocks with fingers and toes before the next wave comes!

The wave that comes is perpendicular to the rocks

The surfers that know the water make it look easy to surf along the cliff face - YIKES

Continuing on:  Manana or Rabbit Island from Makapu'u lookout, small grassy/rocky islet in front is a seabird sanctuary

All the islands are beautiful

Another very entertaining show off
